The Confederate Regular Army by Richard P Weinert, Jr., White Mane Publishing 1991, hardback with dust jacket.
“This is an odd little book about an even odder subject. Many historians see how little evidence of the Confederate Regular Army exists, and assume it was a phantom. Instead, it was a military organization that existed mostly on paper, but with an officer corps that led the Confederate volunteer forces for much of the war. Only a handful of units were ever fully recruited, mainly specialized artiller and engineer units, and none of these were used in the most famous battles. Instead, they served at New Orleans, Charleston and Mobile, manning guns and building fortifications. A small unit of cavalry recruited in Texas and a strange group recruited in Maryland before the war broke out provide interesting stories, but these are not the grand stories of sweeping battles. They’re the little stories of men whose actions were largely overlooked.” From Goodreads Review
